Native American Playing FluteAn examination of the various types of music from the various cultures of America. The contributions of these cultures to the development of various musical styles will be studied with an emphasis on the oppression of certain cultures and the dominance of others. Students will learn how music helped various cultures and cultural elements persevere through adversity. (AA, CSU, UC).

Textbook: An Introduction to America's Music (which includes 3 CD's) by Richard Crawford, 2001, W.W. Norton Company.

The book with the CD's is available from the COS bookstore.

4) You must log in within the first two days of class and complete your “Introduction” or you will be dropped!

Almost all the technical difficulties people have using Etudes come from incorrect browser settings. Once you've learned how to log in, go to the Etudes Gateway. You won't be able to login until the day after you register for the course, and you won't actually have access to this course until the first day of class.
