Effective Fall 08, there is a NEW prerequisite for Biology 1 Principles of Biology, Biology 6 Microbiology, and Biology 12B Human Physiology. BIOLOGY 91 BIOLOGY PREPARATION - is a one-unit course that covers the basic biological concepts necessary to succeed in these courses. The class and its website are closed down right now while we make improvements, but will be back up in time for students to begin working on the Fall section (in preparation for spring classes on Nov 3. You need to discuss whether you need to take this class with your advisor, so make an appointment as quickly as possible. If you dont have an advisor yet, contact the Counseling Office at 530-938-5353 to make an appointment. You can also contact Dave Clarke in the Biology Department at 530-938-5250.
Biology Preparation is designed solely to be the prereq to the Biology Majors courses (Principles of Biology, Zoology, Botany) and the Microbiology and Physiology for the Health careers students.. That means that EVERYTHING in this short course is essential for your success in the courses. It is also designed so that, if you already possess that knowledge, you will test out of Bio 91 very quickly, with the knowledge that you are indeed ready for the course. There are 3 pieces within Bio 91: Basic Science, Basic Chemistry and Basic Cell. When you start the course you'll be given the option of taking a 'pre-test'. If you pass the pre-test, you will have demonstrated that you are competent in that area and can move to the next section. And same for the latter two sections. If you don't pass a pre-test, you'll be directed to a variety of activities, readings and websites that will help you come up to speed. Eventually, you take another test, (hopefully) pass it, repeat the process with the remaining sections, and you're done.
Those of you who are registering for classes using the online registration will have to do so in 3 steps. First, register for Bio 91. Second, call the counseling office at 530-938-5353 and explain to them that you have registered for Bio 91 and need someone to confirm that and make the computer change which will allow you to enroll in Bio 1 (or Bio 6 or Bio 12b). Third, after they've made the change, you can then go back into the online registration and complete your registration for the fall!

Biology is the study of living systems and how they interact with the nonliving world and with one another. It is a discipline that bridges the physical and social sciences.
