Classification of Course:
Three units with a fourth hour lab. Degree applicable and CSU transferable. This class fulfills the Reading Competency for AA
degree and is a prerequisite for English 1A. You must receive a "C" or better to satisfy the Reading Competency
requirement and to satisfy the prerequisite requirement for English 1A or score
90 or above on the COMPASS Reading Placement Test.

Recommended:
College level dictionary and a three-ring notebook with paper dividers
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able:
- Adjust reading rate according to the purpose and difficulty of reading materials.
- Use different context clues to understand the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary in a reading selection.
- Locate and identify topics, topic sentences, central point, implied main idea, and major and minor details in a reading selection.
- Identify and locate transitional words and patterns of organization in a reading selection.
- Make accurate inferences and distinguish the difference between facts and opinions in a reading selection.
- Identify the purpose, tone, and bias in a reading selection.
- Recognize the points and supports of an argument, inadequate support, and irrelevant information in a reading selection.
