Maria Elena Fernandez

Maria FernandezMaria Elena Fernandez wrote her first poem in the sixth grade, in which she noted that two souls blended lightly, like cream. Since then, Maria has relentlessly pursued poetry and the arts, always seeking the perfect alchemy of passion and craft.

Maria earned her M.A. in English and Creative Writing from CSU, Sacramento. She has also completed advanced interdisciplinary studies in the Humanities at CSU, Dominguez Hills. Her poetry has appeared in Moving Mountain and Jefferson Monthly, and she was a guest poet on NPR’s West Coast Live. Maria teaches English and Humanities courses at College of the Siskiyous.

In addition to teaching, Maria was an education consultant from1990 to 1998, providing multicultural, vocational gender equity, and workforce diversity training at both the state and national levels. She is the author of Mariposa: A Workbook for Discovery and Exploration (1995), a textbook written specifically for young Latinas and published by the California Department of Education

Maria lives and writes in California’s far north. She and her family spend their free moments exploring the west.
