My Education: B.S. Civil Engineering with highest honors, University
of Texas; M.S. Structural Engineering. University of California Berkeley; B.S.
Physics Summa Cum Laude (Outstanding Graduate in Physics Award), Southern Oregon
University; Advanced Study: University of Colorado, Boulder, University of Washington
My Teaching Philosophy: I believe very strongly that learning is most
effective when the student is activly involved in the learning process. I am
particularly interested in finding effective ways for students to develop a
deep understanding of physics concepts. I believe in the findings of physics
education research; students develop little conceptual understanding in a "traditional"
physics course which emphasizes primarily quantitative problem solving. I think
that no student should receive a college education without learning the fundamental
rules of operation of our physical universe. However, I also feel that the basic
college physics course should be fun and interesting and need not be highly
mathematical or problem solving oriented.
