For helpful tips and more information on maintaining your F-1 Visa requirements, go to https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov.

You are responsible for maintaining your F-1 student visa status to continue your studies in the U.S. This section of our website is designed exclusively for our current international students. It includes an overview of the most important immigration regulations affecting F-1 students in the U.S. in the areas of academics, employment, travel, medical insurance, school transfer, driving, maintenance of valid student status, and more.

  • Never drop below 12 units. You must enroll AND maintain a minimum of 12 units each semester (Fall and Spring) with a 2.0 GPA. Note: "W" does not count toward the 12 unit minimum requirement.
  • Have current health insurance on file or you will have a HOLD placed on your mySiskiyous account.
  • Have a current comprehensive student educational plan (SEP) on file with Admissions and Records.
  • Meet with a Counselor or Advisor once a semester. Please call Counseling and Student Support Programs to schedule this appointment.
  • To obtain a California Drivers License, please come to our office for a DMV letter.
  • Have a DSO sign page 3 of your SEVIS I-20 if you want to travel outside the U.S.
  • Submit your Acceptance Letter to transfer out to a new school.
  • Meet with a DSO once per month to check in and report any changes to your phone, address (permanent or temporary), or to report travel outside of the U.S. during session breaks.
  • Meet with a DSO if considering employment on campus and to receive help applying for a Social Security Card. An F-1 student may not begin working prior to receiving their Social Security Card which provides permission to work in the U.S.

All international student applicants are required to provide proof of English proficiency. We accept the tests listed below. If you do not currently meet the English proficiency requirement, we encourage students to try back at a later date after some more practice, tutoring, additional courses, or attending an English language school. We recommend that applicants make sure they meet the English proficiency requirements prior to applying because the application fee is non-refundable.

Applicants who have completed their Secondary Education at an English teaching institution must submit official transcripts or final year exam scores to show English proficiency.

Applicants having completed courses from an English language school or other U.S. college, will need to submit official transcripts and course descriptions of the English or English as a Second Language classes taken.
