UPDATE: Commencement and Graduation 2020
In the last month, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we connect with each other on a daily basis. People are using videoconferencing for game nights, birthdays, and many different kinds of celebrations. While we have become accustomed to using emojis to give high-fives and hugs, we weren't expecting emojis to replace these types of actual interactions we have with people on a daily basis in the name of health, safety, and well-being.
College of the Siskiyous, just as all colleges and universities, is faced with the reality that holding a large, in-person event is not in the best interest of our students, their families, or our community. Nonetheless, we do feel that it is incredibly important to honor our graduates in the best way possible and to move forward with a virtual commencement.
Commencement is a special event that marks the celebration and culmination of years of hard work completed by our students. In no way do we want to minimize our graduates' accomplishments, so we commit ourselves to creating a virtual ceremony that will show the pride we have for our graduates. We desire to recognize the tenacity and commitment they have shown to complete their degrees during a crisis that will be catalogued in history.
Details will be sent via email regarding the virtual commencement to students who have petitioned to graduate.
Degrees are not automatically awarded. See Instructions on Petitioning to Graduate below.
Priority application deadline was April 1, 2020, but there is still time to petition to graduate!
We are still working on the technical aspects of live streaming or premiering the virtual graduation video. The date and premier broadcast of the Virtual Graduation is May 29, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. and can be accessed through the College of the Siskiyous Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CollegeoftheSiskiyous/. Please see this letter and instructions for participating in the virtual graduation. The deadline to submit your selfie video is Friday, May 8!
We will be providing printable, electronic copies of the Commencement Program prior to the premier broadcast. Students will be listed in the program and in a release to the media unless they opt out by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, or if they had previously opted out through their petition form. If you are unsure whether or not you opted out, feel free to send an email to ask. Students who opt out of being in the printed program or media release may still be included in the virtual graduation. Please specify whether you want to opt out of both or not.
Students are not required to participate in the virtual graduation/commencement in order to receive their diploma/degree. Students can opt out of participating in the video or having their name called and degrees listed by emailing email@example.com. Please state that you do not want to participate in the virtual commencement ceremony and sign with your first and last name. This does not opt students from being in the program. Please see note above regarding Commencement Printed Program. Please specify whether you want to opt out of both or not.
All students who are completing graduation requirements must file a "Petition to Graduate" available online or at the Counseling and Student Support Programs Office. It is recommended that you petition after registering for your spring classes. The earlier the better! (Priority Deadline for submission is April 1). Late petitions will result in your name not being listed in the program.
Students interested in becoming the student graduation speaker must apply and audition before a panel comprised of staff, students, and faculty. The Student Speaker Application deadline is to be determined. Applications will be emailed to all students who have petitioned to graduate.
Pending successful completion of your courses, your degree will be sent to the address on your graduation petition in late July.
Graduation candidates will be mailed commencement information at the end of April.
