The 2025 Lunar New Year: A Celebration of the Wood Snake

Wood Snake

The Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival or Chinese New Year, is one of the most important and widely celebrated holidays in many East and Southeast Asian cultures. It marks the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar, and each year is associated with one of the twelve zodiac animals. In 2025, the Lunar New Year will begin on January 29th, 2025, marking the start of the Year of the Wood Snake.

Origins and Significance: The Lunar New Year has a rich history dating back thousands of years. It originated as a time for farmers to celebrate the end of winter and the beginning of spring, offering sacrifices to deities and ancestors for a bountiful harvest. Over time, it evolved into a broader celebration of new beginnings, family reunions, and good fortune.

The Zodiac and the Wood Snake: The Chinese zodiac is a repeating cycle of 12 years, with each year represented by an animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each animal is associated with specific characteristics and traits.

The Snake is the sixth sign of the zodiac and is often associated with wisdom, intelligence, mystery, and intuition. The element associated with 2025 is Wood, which is linked to growth, creativity, and vitality. The combination of the Snake and Wood suggests a year of potential for growth, adaptability, and insightful progress. People born in the Year of the Wood Snake are often considered to be intelligent, creative, and adaptable, with a strong sense of intuition.

While each Chinese zodiac sign is associated with a fixed element, each year is associated with an annual element as well.

The Fixed Elements:

  • Metal: Monkey and Rooster
  • Wood: Tiger and Rabbit
  • Water: Rat and Pig
  • Fire: Snake and Horse
  • Earth: Ox, Dragon, Goat, and Dog

Annual Elements:

  • Metal: Solidity and willpower
  • Wood: Imagination and creativity
  • Water: Responsiveness and persuasion
  • Fire: Passion and bursts of dynamic energy
  • Earth: Down-to-earth qualities that encourage focus and commitment to achieve goals

To figure out which element is associated with your birth year, look at the last number of your birth year: 0 or 1: Metal, 2 or 3: Water, 4 or 5: Wood, 6 or 7: Fire, 8 or 9: Earth

College of the Siskiyous 2025 Winter Session & Spring Semester schedule of classes.

Spring Semester Registration is Open: Registration for the 2025 spring semester is open. Remind students to register early to get the classes they want and need. Print copies of the schedule of classes were mailed to all Siskiyou County households in December. Or view the schedule online.

Website Redesign: Work continues on the college's website redesign project. Student user testing of the new design took place January 6 - 10, with six Siskiyous students participating in the screen testing. We received lots of good feedback that our consultants will use as we continue work on the design phase. Next up will be 'building out' the responsive pages. The whole project is flowing smoothly and we are on track with our timeline. In June, our consultants at iFactory will turn over the project to Modern Campus who will then build out our content management system (CMS). This is when we will really start to see 'the wheels moving and shaking' and moving fast towards our 'new website go live' goal which is the end of the fall semester (December 2025). We encourage everyone to continue making sure our current webpage content is current and updates are addressed when information is requested.

Graduation 2025: The Petition to Graduate deadline is April 15. Please encourage students who may be eligible to graduate to submit their petition. If you have questions about Graduation 2025 or would like to help with the event, send an email to pio@siskiyous.edu. Graduation will be held at the Weed Campus Football Stadium on Friday, May 16 beginning at 6:00 pm. All students who plan to participate in the ceremony should also plan to attend rehearsal to be held earlier in the day at 1:00 pm.

Holiday Craft Fair: The 27th Annual COS Holiday Craft Fair was held December 6 and 7 at the COS Weed Campus in the Gym. This Craft Fair celebrates the finest of handcrafted products produced by local and regional artisans and crafters. Once again, it was a great event, great weather, and a great time. Thank you to all who came out and supported our vendors.

Together We Make a Difference: Tuesday has come and gone, but the work does not stop there. It is that time of year when we "kick off" the campus Payroll Contribution Campaign. The amount of monthly contribution is not as important as the fact that you participate. Donations range from as low as $5 to as much as $50 or more, and all donations are tax-deductible. I hope you will consider participating. Employee Payroll Deduction Form

Reminder… Siskiyous Publicity (Creating Flyers, Programs, Digital Ads, and more): Please remember that all publicity, promotional, and marketing materials must be submitted to the Public Relations Office (email pio@siskiyous.edu) before being posted, printed, or distributed on campus and in the community. This includes images used in social media posts and other print publications. This process ensures that all materials meet branding and accessibility standards. Questions – send an email, call the office, or stop by for a chat. We are happy to meet and discuss.

Sign up for COS Connect (powered by Everbridge): This is a free system we use to send out emergency notifications, updates, general news, reminders, etc. Users can choose to receive text message and/or email. To sign up, go to homepage and scroll down to bottom of the page where the button is found and follow directions. Need help, send an email, call the office, or stop by for a chat.

Come Join Our Team: We are looking for new volunteers to join the Eagle’s Nest team. Volunteers work as cashiers, screen items as they come in, price merchandise, repair items, research antiques, etc. There is never a dull moment at the Eagles Nest. We are also looking for student workers. If you know of anyone who may be interested in volunteering or working as a paid student worker, have them call (530) 938-4663 or stop by the Eagle’s Nest Shop to speak with Angel Keen, Shop Supervisor.

Student Services

Welcome 2025! This past year much was accomplished in Student Services and that work will continue as we enter the new year. We are currently recruiting for a Dual Enrollment Counselor/Coordinator, a SAS Counselor, and a Director of Student Housing & Student Life. Each of these positions are vital to the work that is done in Student Services, on behalf of students.

This upcoming year we will see the full implementation of ConexED within Student Services. Online orientation will be overhauled. We will continue working on our Strategic Enrollment Management Plan goals. Student Housing handbooks have been overhauled. A new student housing project will break ground. The list goes on and on of what's to come and we are all very excited about it.

We are so grateful for a wonderful team that is ready to tackle what lies ahead. The Student Services team is full of dedicated professionals that make a positive difference. They deserved the much-needed holiday break, but now we are back to doing what we love and doing it well… serving students. Happy New Year and looking forward to an exciting 2025!

Outreach and Retention

December flew by quickly! The new student ambassadors, known as the Eagle Ambassadors, decorated the Student Center for the holiday season, giving it a welcoming atmosphere. They are getting established and are happy to hit the ground running for the upcoming spring semester.

Our department hosted the COS Holiday Dinner on December 5 in the Student Center where we initially estimated 175 in attendance, and we counted over 200 students who came and ate dinner!

We are working on plans for next year to bring back some of the beloved traditions from previous years. If you are interested in participating, please reach out.

TRiO

Happy 2025 from TRiO! December was a fantastic month for our team as we connected with students and wrapped up 2024 on a high note. We celebrated a delayed Friendsgiving with delicious "Famous Bowls" and enjoyed a magical evening walk at the Festival of Lights in Redding, CA.

Looking ahead, the TRiO crew is excited for an incredible year filled with fun events and trips for our students. We're kicking off the year by being part of California history. TRiO is traveling down to Los Angeles to attend the first HBCU Battle of the Bands hosted on the West Coast at the brand-new Sofi Stadium February 2.

We can't wait to share all the successes and joy this semester will bring!
