Lock Bloks - Classrooms and offices around campus have been equipped with the new "Lock Blok" safety feature to provide increased security in the event of an active shooter on campus. These lock blocks, the small, black rubber device attached to doors around campus you may have seen on your classroom doors are to make locking doors faster in case of an immediate threat on campus. They are designed so that all doors to a room can be closed and quickly locked without having to use the keys.
The lock block is not a lock itself, but it holds the door to a certain extent so the actual lock system of the door does not engage. The device, attached to the inner side of the door, close to the handle, is meant to hold the door open when the door itself has been locked. With the lock block in place, the doors are kept partially open, but locked at all times. In the case of an active shooter or other potentially dangerous scenario on campus, students just have to slide the lock block out of the way and shut the door to lock the classroom without the need of keys.
Lock blocks are engaged per classroom door schedule during Maintenance's early morning opening rounds. Lock blocks should stay engaged until custodians close the classrooms at night or if an emergency arises during the day and there is a need to lock the classroom door immediately.
If your lock block disengages itself, please submit an FMX for immediate replacement, they do wear out.
Facilities Project News:
Shout out to the Maintenance and Custodial staff that show up every day and get it done! You are appreciated.
The Fire Technology department would like to share an article published by Enjoy Magazine in the September 2024 issue.
The next Fire Academy will be starting October 28 with a full roster of 30 cadets. Save the date now as Graduation will be held May 2, 2025. Most of the cadets are enrolled in EMR or EMT, a perquisite for the Fire Academy.
We are now offering all Fire Technology Core classes on a two-semester cycle, with half being offered in person and the other half being offered online. This will alternate each semester to accommodate both online and in person desires.
New equipment has been added to inventory in order to improve our ability to train and do our accreditation testing for the State of California requirements.
The library’s fall semester got off to a busy start. So far, the library has checked out over 560 items to 307 students, including over 350 paper textbooks and 70 calculators! The campus laptop checkout program remains popular… of the 125 laptops we started with, we only have a few left. Students are also slowly starting to discover our other technology items such as headphones, charging cables, mice, keyboards, and webcams (a list of tech items is on our web site).
In spring 2024, artist Jim Phillips donated two metal and wood art pieces to the College, which are now hanging in the library. The pieces, Book and Flight, were originally on display in the LRC lobby gallery around 1990. The library is also currently hosting an exhibit about the Osage people. The exhibit was created by Weed resident Donna Winger who was inspired to share some of her Osage family history after reading the book Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann. The exhibit was on display at the Weed and Yreka branches of the public library before coming to College of the Siskiyous and will be on display through the fall semester. Killers of the Flower Moon (paper, ebook, and audiobook), as well as other books about the Osage are available for checkout. Stop by the library to take a look at the new artwork and exhibit, and to check out books.
Hi everyone,
We are beginning the new Academic Year with many new faces at the college, including new faculty members. Please let me introduce to you to the 2024-2025 Senate Exec team.
Ron Slabbinck (Past President) – Ron has served as the Past President for the past three years. Aside from running the college's Music department, Ron co-chairs the Social Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee (SJEDI). In these capacities, he understands the importance of serving the community and providing an inclusive environment for all.
Carly Zeller (At-Large Representative) – Carly is new to the Senate Exec team, but brings a lot of institutional knowledge to the body. Since becoming the Academic Success Center (ASC) Coordinator six years ago, she has transformed the ASC into an amazing student-centered hub of learning support. She is always interested in advancing student success so she brings that viewpoint when discussing policies and procedures.
Sarah Kirby (At-Large Representative) – Although Sarah was hired in 2023 year as a full-time faculty member in English, she has been an integral part of the English department for several years as a part-time instructor. During her time as an adjunct English instructor, she was instrumental in organizing and sponsoring the Writer's Club. She also served as a part-time representative on the Senate Exec. We are excited that she has returned to the Senate Exec as a full-time faculty member.
Ann Womack (Secretary) – Ann has served as Secretary of the Senate Exec for the past three years. She is a full-time Biology instructor and co-chairs the Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) committee. I can’t overstate how important Ann is to me (and the Senate Exec as a whole). I really don’t think I could have done the President position for the last few years without her. She provides me council when I’m unsure how to proceed and she is always willing to help out and is a great Secretary. I can go on and on about how wonderful Ann is. She is the "wind beneath my wings."
Tyler Knudsen (Vice President) – For the last two years, Tyler served as an At-Large Representative on Senate Exec but agreed to become Vice President this year. Thanks, Tyler! Tyler was recently hired as the Assistant Football coach but served as the Head Football coach for the last four years. I'm really happy that Tyler has stayed on the Senate Exec as he offers common-sense solutions to fix problems.
Andrea Craddock (President) – This is the third year I will be President of the Senate Exec. I am also the full-time Psychology/Sociology instructor. As President, my job is to advocate for the perspective and interests of the faculty. Feel free to reach out if you need to discuss something or have an issue the Academic Senate needs to address.
Briefly, the purpose of the Academic Senate within the California college system (including community colleges) is to make recommendations on academic and professional matters. Some of these matters include curriculum, student progress, faculty roles, college governance, accreditation, faculty professional development, program review, and budget development. The Academic Senate meets once a month and regularly addresses many of the items mentioned above. Please make every effort to attend the Academic Senate meetings so your voice can be heard.
Thanks for listening,
Andrea Craddock, Ph.D.
Academic Senate President
