Article published August 28, 1854 in The Daily Herald (San Francisco) contains the narrative of E.D. Pierce, a member of the party making the first ascent of Mount Shasta.

Second Ascent of Shasta Butte (PDF)
The first ascent of Mount Shasta was doubted by many people, so a second ascent was made about five weeks later. The Daily Herald published this article on October 9, 1854 to "fully convince all those who were inclined to doubt the truth of the statement of the first party."
