What is EOPS?

 

    Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) is a student support program for educationally and economically disadvantaged students funded by the State of California and Siskiyou Joint Community College District. It is designed to benefit students who historically have been underrepresented in higher education and who need both educational and financial assistance to attend college.

What is CARE?

 

    CARE (Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education) is a student support program to assist single parents on CalWORKs or TANF to become successful students and eventually find meaningful employment.

EOPS Services

 

Academic Counseling/Advising: Counselor and counselor assistants are available to assist and support EOPS students with academic, financial aid, career and personal concerns while pursuing their academic goals.
Book Services: EOPS provides book vouchers to assist with the cost of required books.
Semester Starter Kits: Each program participant receives a starter semester kit containing several school supplies such as academic calendars, notebooks, paper, pens, pencils, and highlighters among others.
Calculator and Mini-Recorders Loans: Calculators (standard, scientific and graphics) and mini-recorders loans are available each semester.

Transportation: STAGE bus passes are available between COS and various towns throughout Siskiyou county. They are to assist with the transportation cost between college and home.

Miscellaneous: Fee payments of PTK membership and rental of caps and gowns for graduation.

     


EOPS Eligibility

 

You must be a California resident (have lived in California for at least the past 12 consecutive months).
You must be enrolled as a full-time student (12 or more units) when accepted into the program.
You must have not completed more than 70 degree-applicable units of college level coursework (courses completed at all colleges attended will be considered).
You must qualify to receive a Board of Governor's Grant (BOGG) fee waiver.
You must be educationally disadvantaged (ONE of the following must apply):
You do not qualify for minumum level mathematics, reading or writing courses as required for an Associate Degree at College of the Siskiyous.
You did not graduate from high school or did not obtain a General Education Diploma (GED).
   You graduated from high school with less than a 2.5 grade point average.
   You were previously enrolled in remedial education courses.
   Other:
     You are a first generation college student.
     You are a member of an underrepresented group.
     A language other than English was spoken in your home while growing up.
 You are an emancipated foster youth.

 



How to Apply for EOPS

 

 Complete an EOPS application (Word) (PDF) and submit to the EOPS/CARE Office in Eddy Hall 3.
....Submit your application after registration begins for the following semester.


Besides completing and submitting the EOPS application, you MUST complete the following steps:

 

    Take the assessment tests (COMPASS) for math, reading, and writing in the assessment center (Counseling Services Office) before applying to EOPS (first-time college students only).
    Obtain transcripts of any college(s) attended including College of the Siskiyous before Fall 1990 (if applicable).
    Submit a copy of these transcripts with the completed EOPS application.
    Register in 12 or more units.
    Submit a Board of Governor's Enrollment Fee Waiver Application (BOGG) with your registration form when you register for your classes in the Admissions and Records Office (must qualify).
    Complete (recommended) a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
    Submit your application online or by mail as early as possible.


Eligible program participants must attend an EOPS orientation and sign a Mutual Responsibility Contract before services can be received.

CARE Services

 

 Payment assistance for childcare costs while attending school or school related activities
 Textbooks to supplement the EOPS book voucher
 Course required materials
 Gasoline vouchers
 STAGE bus passes
 Personal support and encouragement to succeed
 Special programs and workshops on parenting, employability, self-esteem, and personal development

 

 

CARE Eligibility

 

    You must first qualify for services from the EOPS Program.
    You must be at least 18 years old.
    You must be single head of household.
    You must be receiving cash aid through the CalWORKs or TANF Program--either for yourself or on behalf of your children.
    You must have at least one child under 14 years old.

 

 

How to Apply for CARE

 

    Complete a CARE application (included with EOPS application) and submit to the EOPS/CARE Office in Eddy Hall 3.
    Supply documentation of CalWORKs or TANF eligibility (passport to services).


Eligible program participants must attend an CARE orientation and sign a Student Agreement Contract before services can be received.
