Steps for Enrollment

Eligibility

Any person who meets one of the following requirements is eligible to attend College of the Siskiyous:

  • Any person 18 years of age or older
  • Any high school graduate
  • Recipients of the California High School Proficiency or the G.E.D. test
  • High school students who have met all established special conditions set forth in the school board's policy, has written permission from the high school principal (or elementary, junior high school superintendent), and parent
  • Is an international student who has followed special admission procedures for international students and has paid the non-resident fee.


First-Time Student

Step 1: Apply to the College

Apply to be a student at College of the Siskiyous by filling out an application using OpenCCC Apply.

  • Within 24 hours you will receive an email confirmation with your new Siskiyous student ID (also known as S number) and the mySiskiyous student portal login information.
  • If you do not receive this email please contact Admissions and Records.

Step 2: Apply for Financial Aid

Many people do not realize that they qualify for Financial Aid benefits, so we recommend that everyone apply. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to get started.

The FAFSA helps determine whether students are eligible for Federal loans, grants, or work-study programs.

What you will need:

  • A Federal Student Aid ID to sign electronically
  • Your Social Security Number
  • COS College school code: 001187
  • Your federal income tax returns, W-2s and other records of money earned

Note: The FAFSA asks about 100 questions and can take about 30 minutes to fill out. If you gather all of the documents you need ahead of time, it will be much easier and faster.

After you complete the FAFSA, allow 5-7 business days for the Financial Aid Office to process your application. Check the status of your application by logging into the mySiskiyous student portal and clicking on the Billing & Financial Aid tab.

Step 3: Send in Official Transcripts

COS uses a holistic approach in assessing a student's overall preparedness for courses such as math and English. To expedite placement in your classes send in your official high school or college transcript to:

Step 4: Orientation

Set up a Siskiyous Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) Session. SOAR sessions can be completed in person or online. To schedule a SOAR contact our Counseling and Student Support Programs department:

What is a SOAR?

  • A SOAR session is a mandatory orientation for new students. During your SOAR session you will receive advising, a class schedule, and a campus tour.

Step 5: Access your mySiskiyous Portal

  1. Click mySiskiyous in the navigation bar at the top of the COS homepage, or go to my.siskiyous.edu. This will take you to a Microsoft sign-in page.
  2. Enter your COS email address, found in your COS welcome letter. If you cannot find your email address, contact the Student Help Desk using the information below.
  3. Click Next, then enter your password, also found in your COS welcome letter.
  4. The first time you log into your account, it will force you to change your password. Your new password must contain characters from at least three categories (uppercase letter, lowercase letter, number, special character), and cannot contain your first or last name or the word "eagles".
  5. Once you have changed your password, you will be required to set an authentication method. You can choose to download and set up the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone, or you can click "I want to set up a different method" and set a method consisting of answering security questions or receiving a code via alternate email, a text message, or a phone call.

If you have followed these instructions and are still unable to access your account, please contact the Student Help Desk with your name, contact information, and either your student ID number or your date of birth and the last four digits of your social security number.

Step 6: Register for Classes

Registration may be completed through the mySiskiyous student portal or by filling out a registration form and returning the form to Admissions and Records.

Step 7: Pay your Fees

All fees are due upon registration. You may pay for your classes one of three ways

  • Financial Aid
  • Contact the Fiscal Services office to set up a payment plan:

  • Pay in full: Payments can be made through the mySiskiyous student portal under the Registration tab - "Pay Bill" or pay in person at the Fiscal Services Office.

Step 8: Your COS Email

COS students have access to Microsoft Office 365, which provides each student an email account once you have registered for classes (or are waitlisted for a class). Please wait 24 hours after registering for your account to become active. Your email account is used for all official communications from the College, so please be sure to check it regularly or have it forwarded to an account you check often.

  • Go to https://outlook.office365.com/owa/ and log in with your full COS student email address. Your COS student email address will be your mySiskiyous user name, followed by @siskiyous.edu (username@siskiyous.edu).
  • Your default password will be your student ID number followed by a hyphen and your birthdate (S########-MMDDYY).

Transfer Student

Step 1: Apply to the College

This will allow academic advisors/counselors to review coursework that you have taken to ensure courses are not repeated, meet prerequisite requirements, and evaluate requirements to graduate. Returning Student

If you have been absent from College of the Siskiyous for over a year you will have to reapply to College of the Siskiyous by filling out an online application using OpenCCC Apply.

  • Within 24 hours you will receive email confirmation with your new Siskiyous student ID (also known as S number) and the mySiskiyous student portal login information.
  • If you do not receive this email please contact Admissions and Records.

International Student

Step 1: Apply to the College

You are a first time student if you have never attended a U.S. school or if you have had a gap of more than 5 months between academic programs.

Download the International Supplemental Application

Once this step is done we will enter your information into our system and report to SEVIS to issue your I-20.

Step 2: Make an Appointment With Your Consulate

Once you have received your I-20 in the mail, you will make an appointment with your Consulate to have your F-1 visa issued. Send the F-1 visa to College of the Siskiyous with your proof of health insurance when it has been issued.

After we receive all your documents, you will be cleared to participate in orientation and registration.
